Same Sex Marriage Celebrations on January 20, 2019

By News, Upcoming Events

Over the past several years many couples at St Thomas have expressed their desire to get married here in their home parish but this has not been possible due to the policy our Diocese. Not knowing if this would change, many of you have been married in other places, sometimes even in other Episcopal churches outside of our Diocese. As you know by now, this situation was changed by the passing of B012 at General Convention 2018. In the week following that decision I made a statement at the July Vestry Meeting informing the Vestry of my intention to proceed with performing same sex marriages at St Thomas. Beginning Advent I of this year, this involves following the new guidelines provided by the Church. The Vestry voted unanimously to support my decision and I provided both my and the Vestry’s statement to Bishop Sumner on July 18, 2018. Realizing how…

First Sunday after the Epiphany 2019 Sermon

By Sermons

First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of our Lord, Year C, January 13, 2019 Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 29 Acts 8:14-17; Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 St Thomas the Apostle The Rev’d Leo Loyola I can make a claim that most of you can’t. I was baptized twice in my life. The first time happened when I was barely three months. I obviously don’t remember anything about it. But I do remember the second time quite well. It was a Saturday afternoon at a beach in Waikiki. My church friends huddled around me, as we prayed and sang. My college roommate Cord who had been discipling me for months led me through the crystal-blue waves. He stopped, and asked me again, “Are you sure you want to do this?” I said “Yes, let’s do this!” I pinched my nose and contorted my face, as my roommate dunked me back-first into the cool…

Foyer Group signup

By Christian Formation

Want to enjoy a small group setting of 5-7 folks in which you share a meal and get to know each other? Consider joining a Foyer group. Foyer groups are a chance to visit and socialize outside of church with people from across the parish. There are no “rules,” and there surely is nothing that says you have to host a sit down dinner in your home. Each dinner group rotates having a meal at each group member’s home. The host usually provides the main course. The other group members each bring an appetizer, a salad, a dessert, or beverages. In some cases, the host of each month does the entire meal, with the guests bringing beverages. You decide as a group how that will work. You are invited to sign up for the January – June 2019 cycle of Foyers. Newcomers are especially invited to join. Please use the…

Volunteer for the 2019 National Homeless Count

By Upcoming Events

We’re looking for a team of 3-5 to join us on Thursday, January 24 from 7pm-12am for the 2019 National Homeless Count. Members of St. Thomas have been participating in this event since 2017. One year, we met John, a 43-year-old veteran, living in his car between jobs. Everything he owned was packed into his compact SUV. Why do we need to know John’s story? Special Federal funds and resources are available, depending on the needs of the homeless population, but we need solid statistics on who is homeless in Dallas County. Veterans can get housing vouchers and medical care. Mothers with children can get food and healthcare to feed their children and keep them healthy. People living with HIV can get life-saving drugs on a regular basis. “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one…

First Sunday after Christmas 2018 Sermon

By Sermons

First Sunday after Christmas, December 30, 2018 Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Psalm 147 Galatians 3:23-25; 4:4-7; John 1:1-18 St Thomas the Apostle The Rev’d Leo Loyola Recently I got a new car. You can’t miss it. It’s the very, very bright yellow Jeep Renegade in our parking lot. Since getting it, I’ve heard two basic comments. The first is something most new car owners expect to hear: “Wow, what a nice car!” The second, most don’t. I know I didn’t, when asked “Did you want yellow?” On the surface, the comment seems to stem from curiosity: Was this your only choice at the dealership? Did Melody want you to get yellow? But, of course, I know better. I know sarcasm when I hear it. What they’re really saying is, “What an ugly color. I would have gotten it in black or white or red.” The truth is I absolutely wanted my yellow…

Christmas Day 2018 Sermon

By Sermons

Christmas Day, Selection II, December 25, 2018 Isaiah 62:6-12; Psalm 97 Titus 3:4-7; Luke 2:(1-7)8-20 St Thomas the Apostle The Rev’d Leo Loyola When I think of the Christmas story, I think of my preschool Christmas variety show. My class recreated the Nativity scene, while singing “Silent Night”. We had kids playing Joseph and Mary, huddling around a plastic baby Jesus. Other kids played shepherds and wise men, sheep and donkeys and various barn animals. I played Cow #1, a life-sized image of a cow painted on cardboard which I sat behind and held up. My teacher had her back to us, stage left on the piano. She had on a baby blue mini-skirt and wore what could be best described as a hair helmet. Hair hardened into this basketball shape on her head, using a whole can of Aqua Net hair spray. It was the fashion of the time….
