Over the past several years many couples at St Thomas have expressed their desire to get married here in their home parish but this has not been possible due to the policy our Diocese. Not knowing if this would change, many of you have been married in other places, sometimes even in other Episcopal churches outside of our Diocese. As you know by now, this situation was changed by the passing of B012 at General Convention 2018. In the week following that decision I made a statement at the July Vestry Meeting informing the Vestry of my intention to proceed with performing same sex marriages at St Thomas. Beginning Advent I of this year, this involves following the new guidelines provided by the Church. The Vestry voted unanimously to support my decision and I provided both my and the Vestry’s statement to Bishop Sumner on July 18, 2018. Realizing how…
On Sunday, January 6, a dedicated few from Saint Thomas helped with our friends from The Gathering, a street ministry to, with and for Dallas’s local homeless community. Come join us in our efforts to be a “church without walls” at Thanks-Giving Square on April 7 and June 16.
Go on a Giving Streak with Carter Blood Care and the Dallas Mavericks! The Carter Blood Drive Bus will be at St. Thomas on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10am-2pm. Come out and give life to your community and receive an exclusive Dallas Mavericks t-shirt and a BOGO ticket voucher. For more information, contact Nancy LeGros.
We’re looking for a team of 3-5 to join us on Thursday, January 24 from 7pm-12am for the 2019 National Homeless Count. Members of St. Thomas have been participating in this event since 2017. One year, we met John, a 43-year-old veteran, living in his car between jobs. Everything he owned was packed into his compact SUV. Why do we need to know John’s story? Special Federal funds and resources are available, depending on the needs of the homeless population, but we need solid statistics on who is homeless in Dallas County. Veterans can get housing vouchers and medical care. Mothers with children can get food and healthcare to feed their children and keep them healthy. People living with HIV can get life-saving drugs on a regular basis. “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one…
Join us Sunday, December 9 at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Central Christian Church, 4711 Westside Dr. We will celebrate the beautiful season of Christmas by hosting “Advent Lessons and Carols.” This is the third year of a collaboration between Central and St. Thomas the Apostle. Leaders from both churches and members of both choirs will perform readings, carols and anthems. Following the service, holiday refreshments will be served in fellowship hall. There is plenty of parking and plenty of seating.
A ministry designed to deepen our relationships with each other, especially people who are new to St. Thomas. Join us for lunch at Cafe Express (5600 Lovers Lane just east of Inwood) the FIRST SUNDAY of every month. Our next event will be on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 11:30pm (after the 11:00 am coffee hour in the Parish Hall). We recognize that sometimes coffee and conversation after church just isn’t enough to develop more meaningful friendships. So how ‘bout lunch! Deeper connections will help newcomers answer these questions: Where do I fit in? Can I make friends in this church? Is there room for me relationally? Does this church need me? Can I find a place to belong and serve? Am I safe here? And who knows – it may help short-and long-term members answer these questions too! If you have any suggestions or would like to be a part…
On Sunday, November 4 at 9:00 a.m. we will have our annual All Souls Day Remembrance Service in the Interior Garden (or in the Parish Hall if it is raining). This is a brief and quietly reflective service when the names of those who have died will be read aloud and an opportunity to light a candle of remembrance is offered. Please submit the names of those you would like remembered on the All Souls Envelope found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate. The last day to submit names is Tuesday, October 30 by noon.
On All Saints’ Sunday, November 4, we hope to begin a new tradition here at Saint Thomas. This new tradition I speak of is rooted in our motto “Helping Hands, Healing Hearts, Welcome All”. As baptized Christians, our role is to serve as Christ’s healing hearts in this community. By “healing hearts”, we live out our mission as Christ’s Church “to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.” As we pursue this mission, we pray and worship, proclaim the Gospel, and promote “justice, peace and love”. (BCP 855) You know of our efforts including our support of such ministry partners as The Gathering and Austin Street Center, our support of the LGBTQ community through efforts such as Lifewalk, as well as the welcoming of visitors to our Sunday worship services. But there is another way we can serve as Christ’s healing hearts: we can help…
Join us for our third session, Thursday, Nov. 8 from 7- 8:30 pm at St. Thomas in the Parish Hall. The Interfaith Academy is an interfaith dialogue program where members of different faith groups come together and discuss different subjects in an effort to get acquainted with one another’s faith and culture. This is an effort to enable people of different faith and cultural backgrounds to engage in a deep and meaningful conversation. This enriching experience will not only enable participants to develop their interreligious and intercultural competency, but foster interfaith understanding and friendship among the society that we live in. At the monthly sessions, representative of each faith group will give a short (10-15 minutes) presentation on the topic of the month from their respective religious traditions and it will be followed by round table discussions. At the end of the table discussions, one person from each table will…
