For our next Beyond the Pew, we will attend Swimming While Drowning on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:30 pm at the Latino Cultural Center (2600 Live Oak). A coming-of-age story about self-acceptance and resilience centered in a homeless LGBTQ shelter. Angelo and Mila are fifteen and homeless. Angelo is chasing dreams while Mila is chasing survival. When they become roommates at a shelter for LGBTQ teens, they build a fragile bond that inspires them to reach for understanding and self-acceptance. Emilio Rodriguez’s poetic coming-of-age story celebrates the healing power of hope and the beautiful mystery of being a teenager. Big Read – Oct 12 through Nov 23

Beginning October 12, Dallas will be reading Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea, a story about a besieged Mexican village without any men and a group of young women who go to the United States looking for defenders, learning truths about themselves along the way. The Big Read kicks off Saturday, October 12, 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Branch. “A Celebration of Mexico” will include a performance by Alma y Corazon Ballet Folklorico, the story of Frida Kahlo, music by Natalie Robles and a keynote presentation by Nicolas Hernandez from RAICES. Read the book and participate in citywide events, including discussion groups, staged readings, movie screenings and craft projects. LifeWalk 2019 – Sunday, October 6

LifeWalk is Dallas’ largest and longest running AIDS walk that includes a fun 5K walk/run through the Turtle Creek/Uptown neighborhoods, and festival in Turtle Creek Park (formerly Lee Park). St. Thomas has participated in EVERY YEAR since the first walk in 1990. Make plans to join us this year on Sunday, Oct. 6. The festival opens at 11:00am and the walk begins at 1:00pm. Before the walk, take advantage of free HIV testing, music, games, and more! Don’t forget to bring your 4-legged family members as well! St. Thomas teams have raised as much as $25,000 in years past. Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Join us in the Parish Hall after our Coffee/Social Hour on Sunday, Oct. 13 for this valuable training. Immediate Responders … Not Bystanders No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Due to many situations, there may be a delay between the time of injury and the time a first responder is on the scene. Without intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths will occur.
