On January 19, 2020 (the same day as our Annual Meeting) we will hold our parish Elections for the three members who are rolling off of our nine member Vestry at the end of 2019: Jean Edwards, Charles Mullins and me. Vestry members serve three year terms. We also will elect an Endowment committee member to replace Jerry Knight, as well as one delegate and one alternate for the Annual Convention. Jean Edwards has served out the remainder of Boyd Richie’s term as delegate, and so we now need to elect a delegate for a three year term, as well as one alternate. The Vestry serves as the Board of Directors for the church in its capacity as a nonprofit Texas corporation. Also, according to the Vestry Handbook by Christopher Weber: “The vestry of an Episcopal church has three primary responsibilities. The first two are managerial: to take care of…

It’s the little things that make a big impact in our community! Try offering a smile to someone you pass by, visiting a neighbor that’s shut-in, volunteering at shelter, donating food to local food pantry or giving a few extra dollars to support the many ministries St. Thomas is involved in. Everyone has something to give! St. Thomas is excited to offer new, innovative and convenient ways to donate: Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3 GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. The goal is to build a world in which the catalytic power of generosity is…
On September 24, following an interfaith event in New York, New York, to address climate change, The Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Church of Sweden (Lutheran) issued a statement outlining the churches’ “call to join in the care of creation.” This joint statement, signed by Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton, and Church of Sweden (Lutheran) Archbishop Antje Jackelén, represents a renewed commitment among the three denominations to work together on the climate change issue. This pledge began in 2013 with the signing of a joint statement at the conclusion of the Sustaining Hope in the Face of Climate Change event in Washington, D.C. The text of the September 24 statement follows: A Call to Join in the Care of Creation From The Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Church of Sweden (Lutheran)…

To our state and national leaders, We are bishops of the six Episcopal dioceses in Texas. All but 700 miles of the almost 2,000 miles of the US-Mexico border are in Texas. All of Texas feels the impact of anything that happens on our southern border. We feel it through our families, many of whom have ancient deep roots in lands south of the United States. We feel it in our economy, as Mexico is Texas’ biggest trading partner. We feel it in our culture, since Texas was part of Mexico before we were part of the United States. Most of all, we feel it in our souls, for these are our neighbors, and we love them. We write to decry the conditions in detention centers at our border because we are Christians, and Jesus is unequivocal. We are to pray without ceasing for everyone involved-refugees, elected officials, and law…
Presiding Bishop Curry, President Jennings are lead signers on brief sent to Supreme Court Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry and President of the House of Deputies the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings are the lead signers of a friend of the court brief filed today with the Supreme Court of the United States. In the brief, they join more than 720 interfaith clergy and faith leaders in declaring that their religious beliefs compel them to support equal protection under the law for LGBTQ people who face employment discrimination. The brief, which supports plaintiffs in three cases that ask the court to rule on whether or not to roll back protections for LGBTQ people under the Civil Rights Act, is consistent with actions taken by the General Convention of The Episcopal Church in 1976, 2009, and 2018. Curry and Jennings, who were also the lead signers on a 2017 friend of the…

Jesus said: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35) In my years of ministry, I have personally seen and been blessed by countless LGBTQ sisters, brothers and siblings. Dear friends, the church has in like manner been blessed by you. Together with many others you are faithful followers of Jesus of Nazareth and his way of love. You have helped the church to be truly catholic, universal, a house of prayer for all people. You have helped the church to truly be a reflection of the beloved community of God. You have helped the church to authentically be a branch of the Jesus movement in our time. Your ministries to and with this church are…
