The annual St. Thomas Angel Tree, benefiting children in CPS care over the holidays, is located in the vestibule on the north side of the Narthex. There are still cards available to pick up. Most of our children this year are infants or one year old so pick up a card or cards so that all of them receive something from St. Thomas the Apostle at Christmas. UNWRAPPED gifts should be brought back to the church by Tuesday, December 4th. The card with the child’s name that was picked up from the church should be attached to the gift when it is returned. If one child is receiving more than the requested gift, please place the child’s unwrapped gifts in a single bag and attach the card to the outside of the bag so that the child will receive all that was purchased for him or her. The Grants Committee at The Episcopal Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle awarded Legacy Counseling Center with funding to purchase new hospital-grade medical beds for clients at The Founders Cottage. Founders Cottage is Legacy’s hospice and rehabilitation center. In a statement, Legacy wrote, “Our Cottage has been around since 1996 and many of the beds have, too. Thanks to St. Thomas, we will be able to purchase 2-3 brand-new beds, enhancing the overall quality of life, care, and dignity we are able to give to clients at this special facility.” — David Taffet A special thank you to the members of the Outreach Committee: Kathy Carson; Lisa Cain; Keith Carney; and, Todd Frary, the Vestry, and the Parish of St. Thomas for making the grants possible.
LifeWalk is Dallas’ largest and longest running AIDS walk that includes a fun 5K walk or run, and festival in Oak Lawn Park (formerly Lee Park). St. Thomas has participated in EVERY YEAR since the first walk in 1990. St. Thomas teams have raised as much as $25,000 in years past. In recent years, the numbers have gone down. This year let’s set a goal of $10,000! Walk, run or just donate! Stephen Toon is an Indiana native and a former Marine. The Reverend Virginia Holleman hails from Connecticut and is a member of the Episcopal Clergy. Together, they are a dynamic duo! When they joined the EWS! Speaker’s Bureau in 2016, Stephen and Virginia were already volunteering to help reduce food insecurity for seniors as members of St.Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church. After personally being coached by lead trainer Kyra Effren, they set out together to spread the good news of EWS! Stephen serves as the nutrition educator and Virginia shares SNAP information. Stephen adds an extra special touch by baking cookies for each presentation. He also customized the chef apparel that he and Virginia wear. Virginia shares about SNAP and its value as a supplement to the budget, addressing common myths about the program. She also researches and provides a list of food pantries nearby the site where they present….
Each year the Episcopal Church of St Thomas the Apostle awards Outreach Grants to agencies in our area that address community needs with a focus on homelessness, hunger, health and health-care challenges (both physical and mental), social justice and education. This year we anticipate awarding approximately $5,000, divided among one to three organizations. Our priority is funding specific projects that would not be accomplished without our assistance. Unfortunately, we do not provide unrestricted operating funds or funding for ongoing projects and needs. In addition, organizations must be headquartered and operate in Dallas County and must be a tax-exempt organization under IRS code 501(c)(3). The process for requesting fund is simple. All we ask is for you to send a written (hard copy) letter requesting a specific amount and a one to two paragraph explanation of a specific project or use for the funding.
